Connection to the Annexation of Texas (1845)
Texas Annexation is in blue in the bottom.
The Annexation of Texas was directly made possible by the Battle of the Alamo. The Battle of the Alamo played a very large part in why Texas was able to win the Texas Revolution. Winning the war is the reason that Texas gained it's independence in the first place. Only after the Republic of Texas was formed did the government gain the right to explore the options for Texas.
After their independence, many Texans favored that Texas be taken as part of America. However, Democrats and Whigs, the two main political parties at that time did not favor the annexation because of the tension that slave holding Texas would introduce into the debate about whether slaves should be legal or not. The patriotism of Texas was inspired by the Battle of the Alamo, and everyone wanted the best for Texas because of it, and being part of America was the best way to fix many of their problems.
